Me, Earl and the Dying Girl

Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl is the film I choose to watch. The film is about a senior in high school named Greg Gaines who spends his free time making parodies of movies with his childhood friend, Earl (whom he doesn’t like to classify as a friend, rather, a “co-worker”). Greg feels like an outcast. As he says in the movie “I don’t belong to any group” when referring to the different cliques that he notes as high school students. However, he chooses this. He is fine with being acquaintances with his peers due to his lack of self-confidence in himself. When a fellow classmate and peer, whom Greg befriended years prior, named Racheal, gets leukemia, his mother suggests that he hang out with her and rekindle their friendship. Greg and Racheal end up becoming unlikely friends and as the film progresses we learn more about them as characters. Greg ends up making a film for Racheal when encouraged to do so by one of Racheal’s friends. The rest of the movie explores the development of their relationship and the exploration of them as characters, circulating around the troubles Greg is faced with.

What I loved most about the film was the way it was made. The cinematography took a very abstract and artistic approach. There were a lot of wide-angle shots or scenes where the camera holds on when one of the characters finishes talking. The film also comprised animated segments which were meant to act as Greg’s subconscious mind, which I found to be very engrossing, unique, and allowed the audience to further understand Greg as a character. I thought that these cinematic choices that the director made allowed the film to feel different and extraordinary. Another aspect of the movie that I really liked was the screenplay. The film managed to be funny, sentimental, and quirky all at once just through the lines of the characters. Even if the scene was two people sitting on a couch and talking, I would still be laughing and smiling at each character's lines. Lastly, I just loved getting to watch the character development of Greg. He went from being a shy and reserved teenager to someone who developed a really strong heart and love for another human being. It was so special to watch him grow as a teenager, especially for people like me who are dealing with the same kind of socially influenced pressures and battles he is dealing with, self-image being one of them.

Overall, I would highly recommend this film to all audiences. I would recommend it to not only teenagers and high schoolers, but adults too. Just because the film is about teenagers navigating their way through high school does not mean that it is any less important at the topics that it is trying to uncover. The movie made me realize that we should appreciate life because before we know it, it could end. I learned to live every moment like it’s the last. I learned the importance of friendship and having a beautiful human connection with someone else. Again, would recommend this movie for a good laugh and a good cry!
